About GEYR

Glen Ellyn Youth Rugby

The goal of Glen Ellyn Youth Rugby is to introduce young men to the game and traditions of rugby that we, as coaches, have enjoyed so much over the years. The game of rugby is a legendary game that mixes strength, speed and agility. It is a game that welcomes athletes of any size, shape, and age. You will find that rugby is similar to sports you’ve played in the past as it involves ball handling, running, kicking and tackling.

The relationship between Rugby and Football

Glen Ellyn Youth Rugby is committed to the complimentary relationship between these two great sports. Did you know that many college and professional Football teams are adopting the safety-first tackle technique of rugby ? Did you know that the rugby srummage has adopted the body positions and technique of Football's offensive and defensive lines ?

Our rugby season starts with indoor practice in December when park district and high school football programs have finished. The season concludes by Memorial Day, before high school football pre-season gets underway. Players returning to Football at that time are physically in top shape, have honed hand-eye coordination skills and are competition-ready.

But we have yet to get everything right - in Football a score is called a 'touchdown', but you dont actually have to touch the ball down. In rugby a score is called a 'try', but you do actually have to touch the ball down....go figure!
